Qatar has launched a national initiative aimed at eliminating road deaths and serious injuries in the future, aligning with global “Vision Zero” principles that treat every traffic fatality as preventable. The strategy is led by the Ministry of Interior (MoI), which has emphasized that enhancing road safety remains a national priority supported by enforcement, engineering, technology, and community awareness.

 

Officials have repeatedly stressed that protecting lives on the road is a shared responsibility. In public communications, the Ministry has underscored that reducing accidents requires both strict law enforcement and continuous development of infrastructure, alongside raising driver awareness. The initiative reflects a long-term shift from reacting to crashes toward preventing them through systemic design and data-driven oversight.

 

Qatar’s approach mirrors successful international models such as those implemented in Sweden, where road systems are engineered to minimize the consequences of human error. The principle is straightforward: while mistakes behind the wheel may occur, the transportation system must be designed so those mistakes do not result in fatalities.

Qatar already operates advanced traffic monitoring systems, but the new direction expands reliance on AI-supported cameras, automated red-light detection, average-speed tracking between checkpoints, and systems capable of identifying seatbelt violations and mobile phone use.
