Saudi Arabia and Qatar have officially signed a historic agreement to build a high-speed electric railway connecting Riyadh and Doha — a project set to become one of the region’s most significant modern infrastructure ventures.

Announced during a high-level meeting between Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Riyadh, the cross-border rail link marks a major step in strengthening economic cooperation and mobility between the two Gulf states.

A New Era of GCC Connectivity

According to official statements, the high-speed line will span 785 kilometres, linking Riyadh’s King Salman International Airport and Doha’s Hamad International Airport, while passing through key Saudi cities including Al-Hofuf and Dammam.

The rail service is designed to exceed 300 km/h, cutting the journey between the two capitals to approximately two hours.

The project establishes a direct, fast, and environmentally sustainable corridor for business travellers, tourists, and regional commuters — complementing existing aviation links and easing cross-border movement.

Economic Impact and Regional Significance

Scheduled for completion within six years, the project is expected to play a substantial role in regional development:

  • SAR 115 billion projected economic impact on combined GDPs
  • Over 10 million passengers expected annually
  • More than 30,000 direct and indirect jobs generated
  • Enhanced logistics and cross-border supply-chain efficiency
  • Boost to tourism, trade, and investment flows

Officials emphasize that the line aligns with both countries’ long-term sustainability and mobility goals, with fully electric operations helping reduce carbon emissions and support greener transport alternatives across the Gulf.

Supporting GCC Integration

The railway is positioned as a central component of broader Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) ambitions to build an interconnected regional rail network. By linking major airports, cities, and economic hubs, the project is expected to advance developmental integration and expand the region’s smart-mobility ecosystem.

Both governments described the agreement as a strategic milestone, reinforcing their shared commitment to deeper cooperation and paving the way for a new phase of modern, high-speed travel in the region.
